Good afternoon, Huddersfield!
Monday brought us sunshine, a fresh breeze, and one of those proper “nippy but bright” Yorkshire days — perfect weather for a little wander around town. So, we headed back into one of our favourite parts of Huddersfield: the Imperial Arcade.

If you’ve not been recently, make the trip. Even when the weather isn’t playing ball (and it definitely wasn’t the last time we visited!), the Arcade is full of character, charm, and some of the best independent shops in town.

Independent Huddersfield at Its Finest

As soon as you step inside, you see why the Imperial Arcade is such a gem. It’s traditional, full of personality, and a brilliant reminder that Huddersfield still has some proper indie magic.

From Bake House — one of the nicest independent food spots around — to unique makers and crafters, the whole space has a vibe you just don’t get anywhere else.

But today, our focus was on one place in particular: Handmade in Huddersfield.

A Shop Full of Heart, Craft, and Community

You might have seen the news recently about the community pulling together to support this brilliant little shop. So we popped in to have a chat, show our support, and take you along for a look round.

Before we even stepped inside, the shopfront stopped us in our tracks. Fresh flowers, bulbs ready for spring, handcrafted pieces from local makers — all beautifully presented. You can tell how much care, attention, and love goes into this shop.

Inside? Even better.
Jewellery, flowers, wooden crafts, artwork, unique gifts, quirky cards, proper Yorkshire bits… you name it, Handmade in Huddersfield has it. And here’s the real magic: almost everything is made by local artists. No mass-manufactured tat. Just genuine, creative, handcrafted pieces you’ll never find online.

It smells amazing too — all the fresh flowers hit you as soon as you walk in. It’s the sort of shop you have to experience in person.

Meet Ant, The Heart of Handmade in Huddersfield

We caught up with Ant while he was preparing flowers, and his story is one worth sharing.

After spending around ten years in a wheelchair and struggling to find accessible work — including an interview in an upstairs office he couldn’t reach — he decided he didn’t want to sit at home on benefits. So he set up a market stall, moved to Huddersfield, and launched Handmade in Huddersfield.

Knowing he couldn’t keep a full shop stocked by himself, he invited local makers and artists to join him. That’s grown into over 70 active creators and more than 100 supported since opening. And he doesn’t charge shelf rent — meaning makers can take a chance and grow without fear of a massive bill.

He’s created a hub, a platform, and a proper community.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Ant also looks after the little community garden behind the shop — adding plants, cushions, and creating a peaceful spot where friendships have formed. It’s small touches like that that make a town centre feel alive.

A Community Rallies Around

The recent support for Handmade in Huddersfield has been incredible to see. People donating, visiting, sharing posts, and spreading the word. Some customers didn’t even realise they were part of that effort — they simply sat on the wall in the garden, enjoying the space Ant created.

It just shows how much this shop matters.
