Why Positivity Matters More Than You Think

If you’ve followed Hudd Show Live for any length of time, you’ll know one thing about us…

We love Huddersfield.

Now, that doesn’t mean we think everything is perfect. It isn’t.

Like every town across the UK, we’ve got challenges. Empty shops, roadworks, debates about investment, questions over the council… we’re not blind to any of that.

But we’ve made a conscious decision.

Rather than spending our time talking about everything that’s wrong, we’d rather shine a light on what’s going right.

And, believe me, there’s plenty to celebrate.

Over the last couple of years we’ve seen incredible events bringing thousands of people into the town. The Cultural Heart project is beginning to reshape the future of Huddersfield. The Light cinema has brought a new buzz to the town centre. Our historic market continues to evolve, new businesses are opening their doors, St Peter’s Gardens is looking fantastic, the improvements around New Street are taking shape, and local independent businesses continue to back our community every single day.

That’s the Huddersfield we choose to talk about.

The Power of Positive Stories

Every time we post something positive, we know what’s coming.

Someone will comment:

“The town’s dead.”

“What about all the empty shops?”

“The council have ruined everything.”

And here’s the thing…

People are absolutely entitled to their opinions.

If someone has concerns about the town, that’s a conversation worth having.

But we sometimes forget something important.

The internet isn’t just read by the people who already live here.

It’s read by visitors.

By tourists.

By businesses looking for new locations.

By entrepreneurs wondering whether to invest.

By families deciding where to spend their weekends.

Every comment becomes part of the story we tell about Huddersfield.

We Shape Our Town’s Reputation Together

Imagine you’re thinking about opening a new café, restaurant or independent shop.

You search for Huddersfield online.

You find a video showing hundreds of families enjoying an event in the town centre.

Then you open the comments.

If all you see is people saying the town is finished, nobody comes here anymore, or everything is terrible…

What impression does that leave?

The reality on the ground might be completely different, but first impressions matter.

Research has consistently shown that online reviews and public opinion influence where people choose to spend their money. Studies from the hospitality and retail sectors show that positive online sentiment increases trust, encourages visits and improves people’s willingness to try somewhere new. On the flip side, repeated negative commentary—even when exaggerated—can discourage visitors and investors before they’ve experienced a place for themselves.

That’s not just true for businesses.

It’s true for towns.

Positivity Is Contagious

There’s another fascinating reason we choose positivity.

Psychologists have found that emotions spread through social networks, both offline and online. Seeing positive messages encourages more positive interactions, while repeated exposure to negativity makes people more likely to respond negatively themselves.

It’s known as emotional contagion.

Put simply…

Attitudes spread.

Research from psychologists such as Barbara Fredrickson has also shown that positive emotions broaden our thinking, improve creativity and make us more open to opportunities. Her “Broaden-and-Build” theory suggests that positivity doesn’t just make us feel better—it helps communities become more resilient and collaborative.

That doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist.

It means not allowing those problems to become the whole story.

Constructive Beats Constant Criticism

If there’s an issue in town, let’s talk about it.

Let’s offer ideas.

Let’s challenge decisions respectfully.

Let’s support campaigns that make Huddersfield even better.

That’s how change happens.

But constant negativity without solutions can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If we repeatedly tell people our town is failing…

Eventually they’ll believe us.

And they may choose not to come.

Not to invest.

Not to open that new business.

Not to organise that event.

That hurts every independent business already working hard here.

Why Hudd Show Live Will Keep Flying the Flag

People sometimes ask why we’re always so positive.

It’s simple.

Because somebody has to be.

We’re incredibly lucky to meet local business owners, volunteers, community groups, charities, artists, musicians and organisers every single week.

They’re passionate.

They’re optimistic.

They’re working incredibly hard to make Huddersfield a better place.

Those are the stories we want to tell.

Not because they’re the only stories.

But because they deserve to be heard too.

A Small Challenge

The next time you see something good happening in Huddersfield…

Share it.

Leave an encouraging comment.

Recommend a local café.

Tell people about an event.

Support an independent business.

Celebrate someone doing something brilliant.

None of those things solve every problem overnight.

But together they help create something incredibly valuable…

Hope.

And hope is often where progress begins.

At Hudd Show Live we’ll continue celebrating the people, places and projects making a difference across our town.

Because if we all become ambassadors for Huddersfield, rather than critics of it, we might just help shape the future we’d all like to see.

After all…

It’s all good in the Hudd.
